Fashion Forward: The Fantastical Visions of Tim Walker

The visionary images by contemporary fashion photographer Tim Walker are creatively inspired by fantasy and imagination, which come to life through a truly collaborative process. His striking photographs have graced the pages of many international magazines, quickly catapulting the artist to high demand. On the occasion of the exhibition Tim Walker: Wonderful Things, an opening day conversation between the artist, curator Susanna Brown, and fashion editor Sara Moonves examines Walker’s fascinating images, with particular attention to the commissioned photographs inspired by the collections of the Getty Museum and the Victoria & Albert (V&A) Museum featured in the exhibition.

For in-person attendees, the exhibition Tim Walker: Wonderful Things will be open for viewing until 6:45 pm. Conversation start time is 7pm.

PARTICIPANTS
Susanna Brown is a specialist in the intertwined histories of photography and fashion, and the author of eight books. She has held curatorial roles in Britain’s National Portrait Gallery and Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A), where much of her work centered on staging exhibitions, building the photographs collection, and collaborating with artists. The acclaimed V&A exhibitions Brown has curated have been displayed at more than 20 venues globally and include Selling Dreams: One Hundred Years of Fashion Photography, Horst: Photographer of Style and, most recently, Tim Walker: Wonderful Things.

Sara Moonves is the Editor in Chief of W magazine. She is the first female editor of W and the youngest editor in chief of a major American fashion magazine. Under Moonves, W Magazine became an independently owned company called W Media, of which she is President. She has spent 15 years in fashion publishing; she was previously fashion editor at Vogue and T, The New York Times Style Magazine. Sara Moonves and Tim Walker have worked with such celebrities as Lady Gaga and Frank Ocean, and transformed Tilda Swinton into poet Edith Sitwell for W Magazine.

Tim Walker rose to prominence in the 1990s with his highly imaginative and fantastical photographs inspired by his love of fairy tales and a thirst for adventure. Since then, his exuberant fashion pictures and inimitable portraits have graced the pages of magazines such as Vogue, Vanity Fair, W, LOVE, Another Man and i-D. His has published seven book and staged exhibitions at major museums. His short films and projects with musicians have won international acclaim.
